“Team man” Hetmyer aiming to assess and play to situation in CPL

One of cricket’s most talked about players, Shimron Hetmyer was recently tasked with the anchor role in the West Indies T20 team. For the upcoming Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Hetmyer said his role may vary for the Guyana Amazon Warriors when he gets going on August 26 in St Kitts.

“It is just playing the situation as it is. In the West Indies team, it was so easy to play that role because there were so many power hitters in the team, and for me, it’s just to play my way, and play whatever way the team deemed me to play. I am a team man, so I do play according to the situation and what the team needs at a specific time. I can be flexible in that way.”

The talented Berbician who is aiming to have a successful season as he did in 2018, where he scored 440 runs, including a century, said he is really looking forward to this CPL season. Hetmyer who became the youngest player to score a CPL century at age 21, said this season he is aiming to build from the recent form that he had with the West Indies team.

“I am not trying to think about my game, making runs for the team but it is for us to win games. Whatever situation my job is to go out and win games for the team,” Hetmyer said in Monday’s media conference.

The 24-year old Hetmyer who had a top start in the 2020 season, scored 491 runs in 23 CPL innings, from 2019 to 2020, where he scored four half-centuries. With the ICC T20 World Cup looming, Hetmyer will be aiming to gather more form and extend that in UAE and Oman where West Indies will defend the T20 World Cup from October.

Guyana Amazon Warriors will open their CPL campaign against Trinbago Knight Riders on Thursday, August 26 from 10:00h.
