Powell presses Test case with 95

– Seales bags four

Kieran Powell last played a Test match for the West Indies in December 2018. The left-hander gave the selectors something to think about after hitting 95 on the third day of the Best v Best 4-Day match in St Lucia.

West Indies continued their preparation for the first Test against South Africa starting on June 10 which will be played at the Darren Sammy National Stadium. Jahmar Hamilton XI ended the day on 218-4, requiring another 93 runs to win on the final day.

Resuming day three on 197-3 with a lead of 283 runs, Jermaine Blackwood’s XI suffered a meltdown and were bundled out for 224 in 55.3 overs. Shai Hope resumed on 104 but added only two runs to his tally while Blackwood fell for 24.

The remaining batsmen fell for single-digit scores as Blackwood XI lost their final five wickets for 21 runs. Jayden Seales was the stand-out bowler with 4-40 in 11.3 overs while Raymon Reifer and Preston McSween had two wickets each.

Jahmar Hamilton’s XI required 311 runs for victory with more than five sessions to bat. In reply, openers Shayne Moseley and Kieran Powell started solid, adding 63 runs together. Moseley made 36 while Shamrah Brooks made 39 before he was trapped by Veerasammy Permaul.

Powell’s knock of 95 came off 175 balls and included 11 fours and one six. Roston Chase retired hurt for one while Paul Palmer (15) and Reifer (22) will resume the final day. Rahkeem Cornwall picked up 2-61 in 20 overs thus far. Both Nial Smith and Shannon Gabriel left the field.
Gabriel is experiencing some tightness in his right hamstring and Smith has some discomfort in his left lower back.

The final day of the match will commence on Thursday, June 2 from 10:00h Eastern Caribbean time.
