Alzarri Joseph grabbed the last wicket as Worcestershire completed a sound innings and 23-run thrashing of Derbyshire on Sunday’s final day. Resuming on 112 for six in their second innings after following on by 151 runs, Derbyshire folded for 128, with the West Indies fast bowler finishing with two for 28 at New Road.
He started the day with one wicket to his tally, having removed captain Billy Godleman the previous evening and wrapped up the victory for his side when he got last man Dustin Melton (1) to edge to Daryl Mitchell at slip, with Worcestershire needing only 50 deliveries to formalise the result.
Joseph finished the game with four wickets to end with 15 wickets from his six matches for the West Midlands county, and will now return to the Caribbean for the two-Test series against South Africa starting June 10 in St Lucia. At Bristol, Kraigg Brathwaite’s Gloucestershire slumped to a heavy innings and 47-run loss to Surrey. With little hope of saving the contest after following on by 315 runs and then slumping to 124 for five on Saturday, the home side were dismissed for 268 in their second innings.
Wicketkeeper Jonathan Tattersall struck an unbeaten 86 off 136 deliveries with 10 fours and two sixes while Mikes Hammond, unbeaten overnight on 38, made 45. Brathwaite made 28 in the second innings to follow up his first innings 38, ending with 295 runs from six matches at an average of 26. The West Indies Test captain will now oversee the Caribbean side’s challenge against the Proteas. (CMC)
