Guyana and West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer has arrived in Mumbai on Monday, March 29 for the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) which is set to bowl off on April 9. The first match of the IPL will see defending champions, Mumbai Indians playing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)in Chennai from 10:00h.
Hetmyer’s Delhi Capitals will play the Mahendra Singh Dohni-led Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, April 10. This will be Hetmyer’s second stint with the Capitals after he played his first season with RCB. The left-handed Hetmyer played a total of 17 IPL matches and scored 275 runs at an average of 21.15 with a strike-rate of 138.88. He has one half-century under his belt.
In his first IPL, he played five matches for RCB and scored 90 runs, with a high-score of 75. In 2020, he played 12 matches for the Capitals and scored 185 runs with a high score of 45. With the ICC T20 World Cup set to play in India later in the year, Hetmyer will be aiming to have a spectacular season to audition for the West Indies T20 squad.
Hetmyer endeared himself to the Indian crowd with his six-hitting ability during the Windies’ limited-overs tour of India last year in 2018. The left-handed batsman made his way to Delhi Capitals after being bought for INR 7.75 crores for the IPL 2020.
Born in Berbice, Guyana, in 1996, Hetmyer represented the Windies in the Under-19 tournament twice: in 2014 and 2016. He captained his side to victory against a spirited Indian side in the 2016 edition of the competition. Much will be expected from Shimron when he turns out for the Delhi Capitals. His ability to clear the ropes with ease and the fact that he also hails from the Caribbean has given him an uncanny resemblance to the West Indian legend Chris Gayle.
The players will be in quarantine for one week before joining the training camp ahead of their first match of the 2021IPL.
