Guyana Harpy Eagles trailing Leeward Islands on rain-affected day

Rain curtailed the second day of the final round of the West Indies championship match between Guyana Harpy Eagles and Leeward Islands Hurricanes at Providence. Guyana were 48-1 when stumps were drawn with Tagenarine Chanderpaul unbeaten on 20 and Kevlon Anderson on 19 not out.

Hurricanes had posted 247 all out in their first innings, replying to Guyana’s 122 all out in their first innings. The Guyanese are still trailing by 77 runs, heading into day three of this contest.

Guyana batted 3.1 overs and reached 3-0 when rain forced an early tea. After the slight drizzle, play resumed. Matthew Nandu was bowled all ends up by seamer Jeremiah Louis at 6-1. Chanderpaul and Anderson then looked comfortable after battling the seamers and seeing off the threat of Rahkeem Cornwall. Rain forced a close to the day’s play with Guyana on 48-1 after 14.1 overs.

Leewards resumed day two on 133-5. Captain Jahmar Hamilton and last-round centurion Kofi James continued from where they left off on day one. Hamilton looked compact during his 27th First-Class fifty while James was looking to play freely. The duo added 81 runs for the sixth wicket, which took them further past Guyana. Hamilton was drawn forward and offered a return catch to the upbeat Kevin Sinclair, who broke the stand.

Hamilton had faced 131 balls and scored 58 runs, an innings which had six fours. James was also dismissed before lunch when he hit one up in the air and was caught for 42. He faced 133 balls and struck five fours.

Rahkeem Cornwall and Jeremiah Louis took Leewards to 201-7 in 77 overs at lunch, leading by 79 runs at that stage. Upon the resumption of the second session, runs continued to flow, off the bat of Cornwall and Louis.

Approximately 10 minutes after one, the rain began and the covers came on at Providence with Leewards on 226-7 after 86 overs. Cornwall was unbeaten on 17 while Louis was on 10, with Leewards leading by 104 runs at that stage. Resuming after the first rain interval, Nial Smith opened the final floodgate with two wickets in two balls. He sent back Cornwall for 24 and then removed Colin Archibald for a golden duck when he was cleaned bowl. Louis was the final man dismissed at deep square-leg when Matthew Nandu pulled off a top catch.

Hurricanes were dismissed for 247 in 92.1 overs. Smith ended with 4-33 in 12.1 overs while Permaul had 3-51 in 31 overs. Kevin Sinclair had 2-48 in 18 and Antony Adams had 1-55 in 21 overs. Guyana will aim to brush aside the deficit and set a solid total for the Leeward Islands.
