Former West Indies captain Daren Ganga came out all guns blazing on his official social media platforms, slamming the Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Men’s cricket team selectors. Ganga slammed David Furlonge, Gibran Mohammed, Frank Simmons and Deonarine Deyal, for the inclusion of Imran Khan and Jason Mohammed in the list of contratced players for T&T Red Force.
Ganga also called out the selectors for contributing to the demise of West Indies cricket.
See Ganga’s statement below
This is a clarion call to TT National Senior Men’s Cricket Team Selectors (David Furlonge, Gibran Mohammed, Frank Simmons, Deonarine Deyal). Please focus on using regional retainers contracts to develop/reward younger TT cricketers and stop using same for senior players who are underperforming and not in contention to play for WI at the international level.
My last FB post highlighted the Selectors decision to have 36-37 year old Jason Mohammed included on the list of TT retained regional players despite him underperforming in FC cricket over the years and not being in contention to play for WI. Part of the role as National Selectors is to identify young talent, inspire them, support their development and not allocate limited resources to underperforming senior players.
CWI pays subventions to territorial boards (TTCB, Guyana Cricket Board etc.) to hire talent with Grade A – Usd$2666; Grade B – Usd$2000 & Grade C – Usd$1500, monthly valued regional retainer contracts. These retainer salaries go to regional players who also have the opportunity to earn additional match fees when they actually play in regional matches. Note that regional retainer contracts are separate to the Red Ball & White Ball retainer contracts issued to WI International players.
So again I pose the question, why do we have players who are 35 years and above contracted with regional retainers when these said players can earn match fees when/if they do play or if they are good enough, earn Red/White Ball retainer contracts. We desperately need resources to be focused on our younger performing players, those like Shatrughan Rambaran, Damion Joachim, Vikash Mohan, Kamil Pooran, Joshua James (from National League); Kyle Ramdoo, Khaleem Mohammed, Nickyle Jalim, Zachary Siewah, Andrew Rambarran, Joshua Davis (from Secondary School’s Cricket), so they can be further polished and developed to create a winning culture.
West Indies Cricket is declining and our National Selectors are directly contributing to the further demise of the game.
Trinidad and Tobago cricket supporting public I implore you to rise up and assist in overturning these dubious decisions!!!
