Shabeer Baksh is well-known around sport, especially in cricket. He is a household name in West Berbice and he is certainly extending that reputation across the Ancient County.
Recently, Baksh expanded his business, Big B’s Baksh Restaurant and Baksh Cafe into Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). The new branch is located at Main and Pope Streets, New Amsterdam.
Baksh started his journey in business while being passionate about sport. He highlighted that the name Big B’s came from his father, and he and his wife decided to name the business after his late father. In the early days, Big B’s was a small operation at the Rosignol Stelling when the ferry service was in operation.
Specialising in quality products in the food industry, the motivated Shabeer, who is also the current President of the Blairmont Community Centre Cricket Club (BCCCC) is hoping to give back to New Amsterdam, where he spent his school days attending the Berbice High School.
Baksh, now 38, balanced his academics with sport – participating in the worlds of basketball, volleyball, and cricket— while helping his father. To date, many youngsters can testify to the positive impact Baksh has had on their lives.
It was in 2015, the main branch of Big B’s opened its doors at Rosignol after the closure of the Big B’s location at the stelling in 2008. Baksh ‘s wife, Maria said that Big B’s would be aiming to maintain a high standard. The goal-oriented Baksh said he was aiming to conquer Berbice by greatly expanding the business. He is also hoping to expand throughout the country.
Having a hunger to give back to the community and create employment, Baksh has reopened the Cafe at the Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) location to give the employees more working hours. Since the opening of the new location in New Amsterdam, Baksh and his team have received positive feedback on the quality service that is on offer. Big B’s also provides free delivery.
